Light Emitting Diode (LED) merupakan sumber cahaya semi konduktor yang sering digunakan di banyak perangkat. Komponen elektronik praktis ini diperkenalkan pertama pada 1962.

Kini, penggunaan LED sedang jadi tren di kalangan anak muda Jepang. Yakni menempelkannya di gigi (seperti kawat gigi), sehingga dapat menyala saat pengguna tersenyum.

Aksesori mode ini diciptakan oleh dua desainer Jepang dan digunakan dalam iklan komersial penjualan pakaian Laforet Harajuku untuk musim dingin.

LED ini dengan mudah ditempelkan di gigi dan dapat berubah warna saat Anda tersenyum. Warna dapat diganti tanpa kabel dengan memanfaatkan komputer antarmuka. Tentu saja, perangkat ini bekerja sangat baik di tempat gelap.

Motoi Ishibashi dan Daito Mababe yang menciptakan teknologi ini membuat video �Party in Your Mouth� di mana sekelompok anak sekolah memamerkan gigi bewarna mereka.

Ide awal dari teknologi senyum LED ini muncul saat Ishibashi melihat video LED Throwies, lampu kecil ayng ditempelkan di magnet kemudian dibuang pada permukaan logam. Ini seperti grafiti menyala, ujar Ishibashi.
