Microsoft takes a lot of heat these days for being behind the times and caught up in bureaucracy. But as one Reddit post put it, working for Microsoft has its advantages. The post came along with a screenshot from speedtest.net showing a staggering speed of 526Mbps down, and 215Mbps up. This is among the fastest connections in the US, and still impressive worldwide.
Just how fast is that? According to speedtest.net�s aggregated data, the average download speed in the US is currently sitting at 10.45Mbps. So the internet speeds at Microsoft are just about 50-times faster. No big deal. To think about it another way, that outlandish 35GB Max Payne 3 PC install could be downloaded in its entirety in just under 9 minutes from inside Microsoft HQ.
So the internet at Microsoft is really fast, but what about other tech giants? Well it just so happens that workers at some other firms saw the post and added their own results. A Googler posted speeds similar to what we saw from the company back in December at 654Mbps, which is a fair bit faster than Microsoft. A Mozilla employee fired back with a similarly impressive, but losing speed of 624Mbps.
Working in the tech sector seems like a surefire way to get insane internet speeds, but what of academia? Graduating from Drexel University might be a bit of a bummer because you�ll have to leave some amazing fiber internet behind. One student posted a result that puts all the others to shame at 901Mbps. That�s almost a gigabit. The Max Payne 3 download would only take about 5 minutes at Drexel university. I bet Netflix doesn�t even buffer there. Your connection probably isn�t nearly this fast, and I feel your pain.
