Dengan dilepasnya MySpace, News Corporation akan memangkas setengah dari 500 pekerjanya. Seperti dikutip dari kantor berita AP, Rabu 29 Juni 2011, ada tiga perusahaan yang tertarik membeli My Space, yakni Specific Media, perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang iklan online, perusahaan investasi Golden Capital, dan Austin Ventures.

Menurut situs all Things D, News Corp akan menjual MySpace antara US$20 juta hingga US$30 juta. Namun, harga itu baru perkiraan dan masih ada kemungkinan laku terjual dengan nilai yang lebih tinggi.

Angka penjualan MySpace ini jauh dibandingkan ketika News Corporation membelinya pada Juli 2005. Ketika itu mereka membeli situs jejaring sosial tersebut dengan harga US$ 580 juta (Rp 5,24 triliun).

Menurut Debra Aho Williamson, analis dari lembaga riset eMarketer, turunnya harga MySpace karena merosotnya jumlah pengunjung, tergerusnya brand MySpace di dunia Internet, dan teknologi yang ketinggalan.

"Ini sebabnya News Corp ingin menjualnya dengan harga berapa pun," kata Debra.

Pada Oktober lalu, MySpace berusaha memoles diri dengan mengubah diri menjadi jembatan dan situs yang kaya akan hiburan. Namun, upaya ini gagal. Pengunjungnya terus turun. Pada Januari tahun ini, separuh stafnya atau sekitar 500 orang akan dipangkas.

Menurut data yang dirilis comScore, pada Mei tahun ini, MySpace memiliki 74 juta pengunjung, turun dari 32 persen dari tahun lalu. Adapun Facebook dikunjungi 1,1 miliar kali, naik 26 persen, Twitter 139 juta, naik 54 persen, dan LinkedIn dikunjungi 86 juta kali.
