Kembang api berasal dari China, beberapa sumber mengatakan bahwa penemuan kembang api terjadi sekitar 2.000 tahun yang lalu, dan sumber-sumber lain tempat penemuan kadang-kadang selama abad ke-9 selama dinasti Song (960-1279). Sejarah mengatakan bahwa kembang api yang ditemukan pada sebuah kecelakaan oleh koki Cina bekerja di dapur lapangan yang terjadi pada campuran sendawa arang, dan belerang Campuran terbakar dan ketika dikompresi dalam kandang (tabung bambu), campuran meledak

Seorang Pendeta Cina bernama Li Tian, yang tinggal dekat kota Liu Yang di Provinsi Hunan, melakukan penemuan petasan sekitar 1.000 tahun yang lalu. Orang-orang Tionghoa merayakan penemuan petasan setiap April 18 dengan menawarkan korban untuk Li Tian. Selama Dinasti Song, penduduk setempat mendirikan sebuah kuil untuk memperingati Li Tian.
